MY WORK
This portfolio is largely built up of the work I have done for the Fine Art pathway under the title "Gather, Connect and Assemble". I used this title as a way of working and also symbolised this process as a caterpillar growing into a butterfly. The concept is heavily influenced by Kendrick Lamars "To Pimp a Butterfly", showing what youth was like in my perspective. The photographs represent the Caterpillar, showing how things used to be and what sort of environment I grew up in. The photos were edited to a more vintage aesthetic to give it a nostalgic feel. I decided to explore the cocoon concept through the use of sculpture, mummifying a head with bandages. I wanted to show how teens felt the need to shut themselves off to everyone whilst they were developing. The drip paintings worked better with this idea and my final pieces were a trilogy illustrating the feelings of an adolescent growing up and breaking out the cocoon into adulthood.
The overall aesthetic of my work has the colour pink involved as it is my favourite colour, stylish and I think that it is a versatile colour to use for a wide range of emotions. This project I was inspired by Jackson Pollocks drip painting style and decided to use it in a more controlled fashion. I think this way it can be used to show a subject matter but at the same time it keeps the expressive mark making. I also researched punk culture, appropriate to the rebellious nature of teenagers. This led to the provocative writing used to portray their conflicting minds.
